Looks like the next event is the Sand Dunes Regatta on July 25-26 in Corpus.  Anyone going?  Any thoughts on the race?  I gather its a beach launch to an out bouy and back?  Its a good ways down there so I was looking for some input.
I have the itch for more.....

I'm tentively planning on it Bob. Maybe  by then I'll have a spinnaker. Congrats on your seventh place finish, I'm not smarter than a fifth grader.

Jim and I will be going
Jim and I will be racing Sand Dunes. I think the last couple of years they have had a chase boat - courtesy of the Packery Channel - so the format is regular buoy racing. This is the best format for accelerating your learning curve.

We're trying it
My Daughter and I are gonna give it a shot.  I warned them that it will be my first regata.  I'll just try to stay out of everyone's way while I learn what and what not to do.  I hope my boat stays together-something has fallen or broken off almost every time I've been out.  My wife is not impressed with my new toy.

Very cool. Be sure to google for "Hobie Bible" and read a good chunk of it - lots of good advice. Making sure your mast is sealed and does not leak is another good step. Also, check your standing rigging for corrosion around the swages. All in the spirit of avoiding too much 'adventure' at Sand Dunes. Weather at that time of year is normally awesome at Corpus - with perfect winds - not too strong, not too weak.
Look out for the wild cat on the beach - Jim and I will be happy to run you through the basics of your first race and give you some pointers. Hint: Sheet in hard going up wind. I mean really hard. Like both hands as tight as you can. Most newby racers run the mainsheet way too loose. Adjust the angle of your cleat on the main so you can only just cleat it from out on the wire. That way it will uncleat easily (we never cleat the main upwind except for the middle of a tack - and Jim typically runs the mainsheet while I steer).
Chris.

Chris.

Your help would be much appreciated, lemme tell you.  I used to run a very fast 5.2 but I now have what could best be described as an old recreationaly sailed boat.  It doesn't have any form of barberhauler, for instance.  I'm looking forward to adding the "go fast" stuff this boat so badly needs, but I want to add stuff slow enough that I don't get ahead of my learning curve.

Im from CC. Your gonna need
Im from CC. Your gonna need to buy a 12 dollar beach parking permit, which can be attained at any gas station on Padre Island. Also you can camp on the beach....they are very lienant on most rules. Alcohol is allowed just no glass bottles. I don't know if there is gonna be alot of sargassum (seaweed) next weekend or if they will scrape the beach. Would recommend 4x4 for launching boat on sand. but I will pull you out if you don't. Im not on this forum much so if anyone has any further questions feel free to shoot me email

If there is 3 or more Hobie
If there is 3 or more Hobie 16's registered, then they will scored as a class..  This is the same for any other class of boats at Sand Dune regatta.

Hey y'all!  Andrew and I are
Hey y'all!  Andrew and I are not sailing this one (I am recovering from unexpected surgery), but Andrew and his brothers are hosting a beach party & barbecue all weekend on the same stretch of beach..  Feel free to drop by & visit.  We'll be there sometime Friday evening (look for the big, red Dodge Powerwagon,  my little white Dodge 1500 and a very big BBQ grill) + all manner of water toys and motorcycles  :)
Can't wait to see everybody!

I think it was Unexpected surgery.  I assure you if you were going to have your plumbing turned inside out you would have given it a lot of thought.

The doc you recommended was a complete quack...should've known after seeing how he botched yours.

And , seriously, I'm doing much better - should be back to my typically mean & nasty self in no time.  Thanks for asking.  BTW - when you are you gonna get one of those new carbon I-20's?

Carbon F 20
Maybe if I ever get a job again. Kidding. I'm planning on building a new house this fall. When I get started on that, I may get a new boat. If I get a new boat before I start building, I may never start. Until then, I still love my N20.
